MURFREESBORO – Four Murfreesboro baseball standouts were recognized as all-state members on Monday by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association.
Former Riverdale right-handed pitcher Dylan King and former Siegel outfielder Blake Benefield were selected for the Class AAA all-state team. The Central Magnet duo of shortstop Darek Sargent and outfielder Jordan Jackson were named to the Class AA team.
King, who was selected in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the New York Mets, went 7-1 with a 1.49 ERA this past season. He had seven complete games and four shutouts. The Belmont signee was named the District 7-AAA Pitcher of the Year as well as The Daily News Journal’s Pitcher of the Year.
King helped lead Riverdale to its fourth straight District 7-AAA tournament championship. The Warriors reached the Region 4-AAA semifinals this past season.
Benefield, an MTSU signee, was named the District 7-AAA Player of the Year after leading the Stars in batting average (.429) home runs (five), runs scored (25) and RBIs (34). He helped lead the Stars to a District 7-AAA second-place finish in the regular season.
Sargent and Jackson helped guide Central Magnet to its third consecutive TSSAA Class AA state tournament appearance this past season.
Sargent, a rising senior, was the District 8-AA Player of the Year. He entered the state tournament batting .426 with 43 runs scored, four home runs and 45 RBIs. Jackson was a first-year starter for Central this past season.
