Four high school football players from West Tennessee were honored Monday as Tennessee Titans Mr. Football winners for 2015. They are:
Trey Smith, University School of Jackson – Div. II-A Lineman
Andrew Goldsmith, Trinity Christian Academy – Class 2A Back
Emmit Gooden, Haywood – Class 4A Lineman
Dresser Winn, Dresden – Class 1A Back
An offensive and defensive lineman, Smith helped the Bruins advance to the Division II-A state semifinals. He has received offers from numerous schools at the NCAA FBS level, including Tennessee, LSU and Ole Miss.
Goldsmith, a linebacker, moved from running back to quarterback after the Lions started this season 0-4 and helped them advance to the Class 2A state semifinals. He was injured and couldn’t play in the season-ending loss to Trezevant. Goldsmith had several remarkable games this year. He scored eight touchdowns in a win over Scotts Hill and also made several key plays on offense and defense in a second round playoff win over McKenzie.
Gooden faced double teams throughout the season, but he still had an impact for the Tomcats under new coach Steve Hookfin. Haywood advanced to the first round of the playoffs where it lost to Memphis East. He has interested from Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alabama, LSU and other high-level programs.
A prolific quarterback, Winn returned to Dresden this year and led the Lions to the quarterfinals, where they lost to Peabody.
