Four-star cornerback Frank Buncom IV, one of the top 20 players in California, selected Stanford in an announcement Wednesday, at his school, St. Augustine in San Diego.
An honor student, he chose the Cardinal over Cal, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt.
“I will be taking my mental ability and athletic ability to Leeland Stanford Jr. University,” he said in an announcement carried on CampusInsiders.com.
Buncom said he flipped a handful of times in recent weeks before making his choice Monday, although he said he did not reveal it to anyone until he donned the cardinal red hat with the “S” at the ceremony.
“My father is the more introverted type so he would never tell me where he wanted me to go,” Boncum told CampusInsiders.com host Bonnie Bernstein. “My mother never made me doubt it for a moment that she wanted me to attend Stanford University so I knew if I could surprise her with that, it would be one of the best moments of her life.”
St. Augustine won the California Division I championship with an amazing comeback against Madison, scoring three unanswered touchdowns for a 49-42 victory. Buncom led the team with 68 tackles and also had a team-high 38 receptions with five touchdowns.
