PORTLAND, Ore. — The dragon boat team made up of Franklin High School students now has a chance to compete in the World Championships next spring in Australia.

The 20-paddler team, called the Aquarockets, qualified this summer by winning the under-18 title at a Pacific Northwest event in Vancouver.

Dragon boat racing is a club sport at Franklin. And paddler Jeffrey Smith said it’s “truly a team sport.”

Allia Service is in her second year with the team. She says qualifying for the World Championships “blew her away.”

The team will do a lot of fundraising to come up with the thousands of dollars they’ll need for the trip.

If you’d like to learn more about Aquarockets you can check out their Facebook page at  or their fundraising page.
