Ready for Week 3 football action? Several good games are out there to go watch, but the majority of teams are on the road. We’ll have writers and photographers at two games, and we’ll round up the rest of the area’s remaining action.
Chiles at North Florida Christian, 7:30 p.m.
In a rarity, area schools are playing each other for the first time. Class 7A Chiles (1-1) is heading south to face Class 2A NFC (2-0), in what each head coach hopes is a continuing northside rivalry for years to come. The Timberwolves have never made the FHSAA playoffs, while the Eagles own second-place in the state record books with seven state titles. However, this game on paper is very even.
Battle at Bragg?
Tallahassee’s two university schools square off at Bragg Memorial Stadium tonight at 7:30 p.m. FAMU DRS (0-2) welcomes in Florida High (2-0) for a non-district game with a touch of rivalry. The Seminoles have owned the series over the last decade, however, handing the Rattlers seven consecutive losses.
Chiles at NFC; Florida High at FAMU DRS; Wakulla at Madison County; W.S. Neal (Ala.) at East Gadsden; Franklin County at Munroe; Sneads at Maclay
Aucilla Christian at Gainesville St. Francis; Blountstown at Chipley; Godby at Niceville; John Paul II at Thomasville (Ga.) Brookwood; Liberty County at Rutherford; Lincoln at Bradenton Manatee; Rickards at Choctawhatchee; Taylor County at Starke Bradford; West Gadsden at Baker
Leon picked up a win over Mosley on Thursday night in Lynn Haven, topping the Dolphins by a 24-14 score. The Lions (2-1) are now four wins away from a milestone 600 wins in school history.
Lions receiver J’Air Jones hauled in an 80-yard touchdown from quarterback Ty Glasco, while linebacker Joey Grant returned a fumble 75 yards for a score in the fourth quarter to seal the win as Mosley tried to take the lead.
Franklin County ended its 21-game winless streak last week by beating North Bay Haven, 38-0. Munroe and East Gadsden are next wit eyes to get a win, each holding losing streaks of 12 games. Speaking of snapping a streak, Wakulla knocked of Pennsylvania’s Cathedral Prep, 31-14, last week, snapping the Ramblers’ 34-game regular-season win streak.
Godby (1-1) is on the road for the third straight week to start the year, playing at Niceville (1-1). The Cougars fell to the Eagles in the school’s two previous and only meetings, both road games in 2009 and 2010.
