Florida State made its first splash of the day Wednesday, securing a pledge for four-star cornerback Marcus Lewis from Washington, D.C, but did fall short to Michigan for Delray Beach Atlantic defensive end Shelton Johnson, and USC for the No. 1 cornerback in the nation, Iman Marshall.

The Seminoles will likely finish with the No. 3 class in the country, according to Rivals and 247Sports’ composite team rankings. Rivals has USC ahead of Alabama, while 247Sports has Alabama at No. 1 ahead of USC and FSU.

Marshall, from Long Beach, California, revealed his decision with a video documentary posted on Bleacher Report, ending with him putting on a USC hat and walking into the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Lewis, who was considering Miami and Kentucky, received late interest from FSU — enough for him to commit to the Seminoles’ 2015 recruiting class without taking an official visit to the school.

Lewis’ pledge adds some much-needed depth at the cornerback position with five-star signee Tarvarus McFadden after juniors P.J. Williams and Ronald Darby opted to enter the NFL Draft last month.

While FSU locked up four-star quarterback Deondre Francois, the Seminoles could not get a commitment from the nation’s No. 3 defensive tackle in Terry Beckner Jr., who committed to Missouri.

11:20 update: Brian Bell’s high school coach issued a statement on Bell not signing with FSU.

Deondre Francois causes social media stir with his college commitment status

Other topics of interest:

It took about 7 hours, but Byron Cowart’s National Letter of Intent has made it’s way to Auburn just after 4:10 p.m.

Cowart announced his committment to Auburn over Florida after 9 a.m., but his LOI was not faxed during the interim.

Cowart, as you know, did not choose to visit Florida State last weekend. His relationship with Will Muschamp, I’m sure, had a big part in the move.

Here are the early enrollees:

Calvin Brewton, four-star safety out of Miami Central.

George Campbell, five-star wide receiver from East Lake High in Tarpon Springs.

Derwin James, five-star safety from Haines City.

De’Andre Johnson, three-star quarterback out of First Coast High in Jacksonville.

Jacques Patrick, four-star running back out of Timber Creek High in Orlando.

Da’Vante Phillips, four-star wide receiver out of Miami Central. I’m sure you guys remember this story…

Dalvin Cook’s grandmother helps Da’Vante Phillips get to FSU

Josh Sweat, five-star defensive end from Chesapeake, Virginia.

Ethan Frith, grayshirt offensive tackle from Summit, Mississippi.
