FAYETTEVILLE — Three fumble recoveries led to three touchdowns for La Vergne as the Wolverines beat Lincoln County 41-13 on Friday night.
Two of the fumble recoveries were scooped up at midfield and returned to the end zone. The other came after a La Vergne interception; Daz Dillard returned it to the goal line but was stripped of the ball. Teammate Maeik Gray then fell on it in the end zone for La Vergne (6-3, 4-2 5-5A).
“It’s good to win like that,” La Vergne coach Stanton Stevens said. “It’s great to win where your defense creates points for you. I wish we’d been doing that all year. We need to do that next week for sure (when La Vergne plays undefeated Independence). We came out ready to play again tonight. When we play with that kind of intensity, good things happen.”
The first fumble recovery came on Lincoln County’s second play of the game. The Falcons (6-3, 3-3) had picked off La Vergne’s first pass attempt of the game and had possession at the Wolverines 42. Dillon Jean attempted a run and gained ayard. On the next play, quarterback Eli Eason dropped to throw, was sacked and fumbled. La Vergne’s Logan Eubank picked up the ball and went 51 yards into the end zone to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead just 26 seconds into the game.
La Vergne led 14-0 in the second quarter after Dillard intercepted the pass.
The last one came in the fourth quarter. O’Shea Benjamin picked up a fumble and went 51 yards for the score to make it 41-7.
