Furman adds second FBS team to 2015 football schedule

When Furman University released its 2015 football schedule three weeks ago, the school revealed a trip to Jacksonville (Ala.) State, a 2014 FCS playoff team, as an indicator of the strength of its non-conference games.

That schedule grew stronger this morning.

The Paladins announced that they have dropped their Sept. 19 game against the Gamecocks and replaced it with a game that day at Central Florida. The Knights are an FBS team that finished the 2014 season with a 9-4 record after a seven-point loss to N.C. State in the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl.

“The opportunity to play Central Florida was something we were pleased to exercise from both a financial and visibility standpoint,” Furman athletics director Gary Clark said in a school news release.

Central Florida becomes the second FBS team on the Paladins’ 2015 schedule. Furman will play at Virginia Tech on Sept. 12. The non-conference schedule includes the season opener against Coastal Carolina, which reached the 2014 FCS quarterfinals.

Furman finished 3-9 in 2014, including 2-5 and in sixth place in the eight-team Southern Conference.
