Galena’s game plan was simple — just run it down McQueen’s throat.
It didn’t always work, at first, but eventually the Lancers wore down and the Grizzlies took a 28-17 non-league win on a windy Friday night at Galena.
Jake Berger rushed 20 times for 99 yards and one touchdown as the Grizzlies improved to 3-2.
Mateo Lemus carried 11 times for 114 yards and a score. His punting leg helped bury the Lancers a few times, too. Quintin Mills rushed 15 times for 89 yards for Galena.
“We knew it was going to be a good game tonight. It’s always tough playing these guys,” Galena coach Steve Struzyk said. “I felt good with the lead we had and field position, and (the) conditions. I was being really conservative.”
McQueen quarterback Joey Cox completed 19-of-36 passes for 275 yards and two scores. The Lancers had breakdowns on defense, though, as they fell to 2-2.
“We worked together as a team. Everyone was very cohesive. Our line blocked, our running backs ran well. We tackled,” Mills said. “If we can run the ball, we’re going to run the ball.”
Lemus got things started for the Grizzlies, scoring on a 1-yard run with 4 minutes, 1 second remaining in the first quarter.
McQueen answered early in the second quarter when Brandon Aiyuk hauled in a 69-yard pass from Cox and raced across the field for a score.
Alec Van Key scored on a 15-yard pass to give Galena a 13-7 lead, then Berger scored on a 9-yard run to extend the lead to 21-10
Tyler Hutton caught Cox’s second TD pass, a 66-yarder just before halftime that pulled the Lancers as close as 21-17.
McQueen coach Jim Snelling said the Lancers have several aspects to work on, namely yielding big plays on defense.
“They had some breakdowns, too, but their offense picked them up,” Snelling said of the Grizzlies.
