Galion swimmer Sam DeNero cashes in at Wright State

Galion standout swimmer Sam DeNero has decided to remain in the water and continue his swimming career at Wright State University.

DeNero was third at state in the 50-meter freestyle and signed his official letter of intent to the Division I university in Dayton. DeNero admits his Ohio roots are very strong, and WSU’s location played a major factor in his decision.

“Well Wright State is in Ohio, and it’s a Division I school. The team is not huge like other Division I schools, so it feels homier to me,” DeNero said.

During his senior season, DeNero swam his way to a third place finish at the state meet with a 21.20 second finish in the 50 free. DeNero says he will probably stick to his bread and butter events during his collegiate career.

“I will probably be swimming the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle,” DeNero said.

The sprinter enjoyed a lot of success during his time at Galion High School. He has enjoyed the lights of the state meet for three years running in individual events as well as relays. But, DeNero says it is his time with his fellow classmates at Galion during his senior year that will leave lasting impressions.

“I loved going to state for the past three years and getting a relay to the state meet for the past three years. Plus, I enjoyed hanging out with my friends during my senior year.”

Galion swim coach Ted Temple knew DeNero’s commitment to a Division I school did not happen by accident.

“He has the sprinting ability and college-level training. He is dedicated to the weight room, and I think he will be a great college swimmer,” Temple said. “He has been a great leader for our program.”

DeNero plans to study healthcare during his time at Wright State.
