Connecticut Volleyball POY: Gabriela Vazquez


The Gatorade State Volleyball Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Gabriela Vazquez


School: Platt (Meriden, Conn.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Outside hitter
Height: 5-foot-7

Athletic achievement: She led the Panthers to a 20-3 record and the Class L state championship this past season. Vazquez recorded 416 kills, 272 digs and 126 service aces. MVP of the state title game, she is also a two-time All-State honoree and a member of the All-Hartford Courant team.

Academic excellence: Vazquez has maintained a 3.69 GPA.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of the Boys and Girls Club of Meriden.


“Vazquez never leaves the court and defenses have to constantly be aware of where she’s playing,” said Matt Warner, head coach at Glastonbury High. “She can take over matches both offensively and defensively.”

THE FUTURE: Vazquez remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
