THE WINNER: Cierra Rice


School: Grosse Pointe South (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Guard
Height: 5-foot-9

Athletic achievement: She had led the Blue Devils to a 17-4 record and a berth in the Class A regional tournament at the time of her selection. Rice averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 54 percent from inside the arc through 21 games. A 2015 Michigan Miss Basketball finalist, she eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her prep career this season.

Academic excellence: Rice has maintained a 3.41 GPA.

Exemplary character: A member of the National Honor Society and her school’s Conservation Club, she has volunteered locally as a mentor for children with special needs and as a youth basketball coach.


“Cierra Rice is a player that can dominate a game on both ends of the floor,” said Matt Joseph, head coach at Utica Ford High. “She can score inside and out and never takes any plays off. She respects the game and shows sportsmanship whether on the winning or the losing end of a game.”

THE FUTURE: Rice has signed with Illinois.
