The Gatorade State Volleyball Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Julia Scoles
School: South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
Position: Outside hitter
Athletic achievement: She led the Vikings to a 27-1 record and Class 3A state title this past season. Scoles recorded 283 digs, 489 kills and 122 service aces while posting a kill percentage of .501. A 2015 Under Armour First Team All-American as named by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, she is the nation’s No. 6 ranked recruit as rated by PrepVolleyball.com.
Academic excellence: Scoles has maintained a 3.73 weighted GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of her community’s recreation department and as a youth volleyball coach.
“Julia Scoles is the best player I have ever been privileged to coach against,” Jason Stephens, head coach at Hickory High. “She is the type of player that changes the game. You have to build your game plan around beating South Iredell beginning with her.”
THE FUTURE: Scoles has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of North Carolina in the fall of 2016.
