The Gatorade State Football Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Austin Scott
School: Spartanburg (S.C.)
Weight: 186 pounds
Athletic achievement: He has led the Vikings to a 12-1 record and a berth in the Division II-AAAA championship game against Lexington, scheduled for Dec. 4. A 2015 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas selection and a Mr. Football finalist, Scott completed 298-of-438 passes for 4,664 yards and 60 touchdowns against 11 interceptions entering the state final.
Academic excellence: Scott has maintained a 3.20 GPA.
Exemplary character: A member of his school’s junior leadership council, he has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with the National Honor Society.
“He is the guy that makes the Spartanburg offense go,” said Steven Taneyhill, head coach at Union County High. “He is like a coach on the field and has had a great season.”
THE FUTURE: Scott remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
