The Gatorade State Volleyball Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Shayne McPherson
School: Kennedy Catholic (Seattle, Wash.)
Position: Outside hitter
Athletic achievement: She led the Lancers to a 29-2 record and the Class 3A state championship this past season. McPherson tallied 300 kills, 262 digs and 93 service aces while posting a kill percentage of .475. The MVP of the Class 3A state tournament and the Player of the Year in the Seamount Conference, she was a 2015 Honorable Mention Under Armour All-American selection by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Academic excellence: McPherson has maintained a 3.77 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally as a tutor to at-risk elementary school students and as a youth volleyball coach.
“Shayne McPherson doesn’t have the size of some others, but she is totally dynamic and her defense is amazing,” said Tawnya Brewer, head coach of Burlington-Edison High. “Hands down, she is the best all-around player. Her serve absolutely killed us.”
THE FUTURE: McPherson has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of Washington in the fall of 2016.
