The Gatorade State Football Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Cody Mitchell
School: Point Pleasant (W.Va.)
Position: Running back
Weight: 230 pounds
Athletic achievement: He rushed for 2,321 yards and 43 touchdowns on 178 carries this past season, leading the Knights (12-1) to the Class AAA semifinals. A 2014 First Team All-State selection, Mitchell also amassed 101 tackles and 5.5 sacks for a defense that yielded just 11.7 points per game.
Academic excellence: Mitchell has maintained a 3.79 GPA.
Exemplary character: A devoted member of his church community, he has volunteered locally on behalf of the 4-H Club, the Mason County Fair and as a youth football and basketball coach.
“I think Cody Mitchell is the best player in the state of West Virginia,” said Brian Thomas, head coach at Musselman High. “He has size and strength and is very difficult to bring down once he gets going. I have seen a lot of players this season and I think Mitchell is easily at the top.”
THE FUTURE: Mitchell has verbally committed to play football on scholarship at Marshall University in the fall of 2016.
