The Gatorade State Volleyball Players of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season. Each winner also demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

THE WINNER: Tessa Wyner
THE BASICS
School: George Washington (Charleston, W.Va.)
Grade: Sophomore
Position: Outside hitter
Height: 5-foot-10
Athletic achievement: She led the Patriots to a 65-1-1 record and the Class AAA state championship this past season. Wyner recorded 377 kills, 338 digs, 142 service aces and 39 blocks. A First Team All-State selection each of the past two seasons, she’s also a two-time member of the All-State Tournament team.
Academic excellence: Wyner has maintained a weighted 4.50 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of a homeless shelter and participated in a service-mission to aid inner city youth.
THE PRAISE
“Wyner is an amazing player,” said Nikki Johnson, head coach at Riverside High. “She has a great serve and she’s very versatile at every position on the court.”
THE FUTURE: Wyner will begin her junior year of high school next fall.
