Shermon Kennedy’s free throw with 5 seconds remaining sealed A.L. Johnson’s 72-68 win over Georgiana in Tuesday’s Class 1A South Regional championship.

Kennedy finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds to help the Eagles (14-4) reach the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

A.L. Johnson will play Sacred Heart at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Birmingham.

Jacquez Payton had 20 points to lead the Panthers (29-4). Richard Boggan finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Jeremy Smith scored 15 points.

Kennedy scored with 53 seconds remaining to put Johnson ahead to stay. After Georgiana’s Travales Smith made a free throw with 38 seconds left, Johnson’s Charles Edwards drained two to make it 71-68.
