The Beacon High School girls basketball team battled to a 40-37 road win at Lakeland Tuesday, with a bigger battle still to come.
Leandra Echi provided 26 of Beacon’s points, as well as 11 rebounds and three steals. Lauren Schetter chipped in eight points and Tiarra Dembo added 15 rebounds.
“Defensively, we played well,” Beacon coach Christina Dahl said. “We had some good minutes from our players off the bench.”
The Bulldogs held off the Hornets for their fourth win in 11 tries this season, a record, Dahl said, that indicates growth more than results. Beacon will pursue its fifth win at home Thursday against perennial Class AA power Ossining.
“We have a very tough schedule. Our losses are to very impressive teams,” Dahl said. “In those games, we’ve been in them. We can hold our own.
“I think the competition will help us get better, both individually and as a team.”
Ossining, a state finalist a year ago, is 8-2 with losses to Archbishop Molloy and Madison, from Vienna, Virginia, in a game played in the Bahamas.
“We’re battle tested,” Dahl said. “We’re going into that game being battle-tested and optimistic. We’re just going to do our best defensively to shut them down.”
