WHAT: Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Girls Basketball Tournament final
WHEN/WHERE: 6 p.m. today/North Hunterdon High School
WHO: No. 2A seed Phillipsburg (14-9) vs. No. 3A seed Hunterdon Central (16-8)
HOW THEY GOT HERE: Phillipsburg beat 7B-Hopatcong 75-29, 6A-Delaware Valley 70-48, and 1B-seed Newton 57-45. Hunterdon Central topped 6B-Sparta 46-35, 7A-North Hunterdon 42-39, and 1A-Voorhees 55-51.
OUTLOOK: Hunterdon Central is looking for its first title since 2008 when it won what was then the Hunterdon/Warren Tournament. The Red Devils have a nice season under first-year head coach Chris Walker, doing a nice job competing in what proved to be a stacked Skyland Conference Raritan Division. Senior Tess Richardson has led the way offensively with 10.9 points per game, with Michelle Lalor, Alanna Connolly, Christina Mitrow and Kylie Fischer among those who have also had a big hand in Central’s success. Phillipsburg, which beat North Hunterdon in last year’s final, is seeking its third straight tri-county title and have already beaten Hunterdon Central once this season, 63-51 on Jan. 22. The Stateliners are led by senior Jessica Kovatch, a St. Francis signee who reached the 1,000-point milestone last season. She has posted just over 22 points per game, and, along with Hope Brown (10 PPG) and Kylie Devlin (9.1 PPG), has led the way for the Liners. Taylor Bess has also been key for P’burg.
PREDICTION: Phillipsburg 67-59
