Last week was the eye of the stormy girls basketball season.
There weren’t many games between heavy-hitting teams last week, but prepare to run through a gauntlet of great matchups this week.
Oh, where to even begin? Let’s start with tonight’s rivalry game at St. Clair against Marysville. The Saints (3-7, 7-10) could switch from rival to full-on villain if they top the Vikings, who are tied with Center Line atop the MAC Blue with an 8-1 division record (13-4 overall).
Thursday night’s Sandusky at Marlette game could either make the GTC East title interesting down the stretch or as good as done. The Redskins don’t have a conference loss yet while Marlette has just two. Sandusky still has to play a tough Brown City team next week, so pinning one loss to the Redskins down the stretch would arch the eyebrows.
Now let’s get down to maybe the biggest day of the season — Friday.
Two games — Cousino at Port Huron Northern and Croswell-Lexington versus Armada — carry a bagful of conference implications.
Armada’s home game against Cros-Lex is a simple story line to cover. With both teams having one BWAC loss, this game will give the victor a one-game advantage heading into their final two games. It won’t be the conference championship game, but it’s the closest event possible with how late it is in the season.
Cros-Lex nabbed Armada earlier this season in a 53-43 win during the Pioneers’ month-long win streak. Last week, the Pioneers were tripped up against Division 1 power Farmington Hills Harrison.
The Northern-Cousino game will push the winning team into an outright second place position in the MAC Red as both squads sit with an 8-2 division record right now.
The Huskies took a 56-51 overtime victory on Jan. 27. That stood to be Cousino’s lone conference loss until it lost by two points to the MAC Red-leading Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils last week.
With Grosse Pointe South sporting a one-loss divisional record, a win will give either the Huskies or Patriots a hope at capturing the title.
Stay tuned, folks, there’s no sense of missing this week’s hoops action.
