Union County Tournament first round
New Providence 60, Dayton 19: Junior guard Sydney Morang scored 23 points and collected 10 rebounds and No. 3 seeded New Providence routed Dayton on Tuesday 0-19 to advance to the Union County Tournament quarterfinals. Morang also had seven assists and four steals for the Pioneers, who will play host Friday night to the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 6 Union and No. 11 St. Mary of Elizabeth a quarterfinal round game. Sophomore guard Katie Kinum added 14 points and six , while sophomore guard Sarah Zeto made six assists to go along with nine points and five rebounds for New Providence (14-7).
Westfield 46, Scotch Plains-Fanwood 42: Lil Scott tallied 17 poin ts and eight revoundss, and Shannon Devitt added eight points as seven boards as fourth-seeded Westfield escaped the upset to advance. Jaqueline Knapp chipped in eight points and five rebounds and Olivia Luzzi contributed eight points for the Blue Devils, who will face the winner of Wednesday’s game between fifth-seeded Governor Livingston and 12th-seeded Union Catholic in Friday’s quarterfinals. Thabitha Dwunfour went for 14 points and 10 rebounds for 13th-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood, which led 28-25 at halftime in a game tied entering the fourth quarter. The Raiders also got 10 points and nine boards from Micaiah Battle.
Somerset County Tournament second round
Ridge 61, North Plainfield 35: Sam Mahon scored 16 points and Monica Schumacher added 14 points and the newly minted 1,000-point scorers led fifth-seeded Ridge into the quarterfinals. Kristina Mueller and Chrissy Weyrauch each added 10 points for the Red Devils, who will visit fourth-seeded Gill St. Bernard’s at 5 p.m. Thursday. Frankie Cherasaro scored 15 points to pace No. 12 North Plainfield.
