The Millbrook High School girls lacrosse team concluded last year’s regular season with a 14-1 record and started this season with a bang.
On Friday, the host Blazers beat Newburgh Free Academy 18-0. Coach Jillian Cafarchio said her team clicked on all cylinders.
“It was very balanced,” Cafarchio said. “Our transition up the field was great. Everybody touched the ball and helped out.”
Elizabeth Halpin and Samantha Salewicz led the offensive outburst. Halpin scored five goals and added two assists, while Salewicz scored four goals with five assists.
Kaitlyn Daly and Julia Berti also showcased offensive ability. Daly scored four goals and gave out one assist, while Berti scored three goals with one assist.
Rounding out the scoring for Millbrook were Taylor Redl (two goals, one assist), Kiri DiCintio (three assists) and Hannah Fisher (one assist).
Eighth-grade goalkeeper Claire Martell pitched a shutout with one save in her first career varsity start.
“She’s a great goalie,” Cafarchio said of Martell. “She played with us last year and really learned a lot from our senior goalie (Taylor Goodwill).”
The Blazers (1-0) will play James I. O’Neill in Highland Falls at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
