Girls roundup: Ionia holds off Lansing Catholic

By

Led by Jaylynn Williams’ game-high 24 points, Ionia grabbed a 49-44 CAAC White victory over Lansing Catholic on Friday night.

The Bulldogs (5-3, 2-1) led the Cougars (4-3, 1-2), 29-15, at the end of the first half. But after a huge third-quarter run by Lansing Catholic, Ionia led by just three heading into the fourth quarter.

“I think all in our heads, we were like, ‘Oh, we have such a big lead,” Williams said. “They came back kind of unexpected. It caught us off guard.”

The two teams traded buckets for the majority of the fourth quarter. With about a minute remaining, the Bulldogs’ Anna Riccius hit a basket —plus the foul — to give Ionia a 47-41 lead. The Cougars retaliated with a 3-pointer from Chrissy Jurkovic. However, there wasn’t enough time for Lansing Catholic to complete the comeback.

Riccius added 16 points for the Bulldogs, and Jenna Swain had a team-high 16 points for the Cougars.
