When you beat the previously undefeated, No. 1-ranked girls soccer team in the United States, apparently everyone across the country notices.
The Colts Neck girls soccer team shocked not only the state of New Jersey but also surprised the rest of the country when the Cougars upset Northern Highlands, 1-0, in the NJSIAA Group III state final on Nov. 21 at Kean University’s Alumni Stadium.
It was Colts Neck’s first NJSIAA Group III state title in school history in the Cougars’ third appearance in a state final.
When Colts Neck beat Northern Highlands that day, the Highlanders were ranked No. 1 in the country, according to the Nov. 17 edition of the USA Today High School Sports/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Girls Soccer Super 25 Rankings. The rankings were done every Tuesday throughout the high school girls soccer season, and those rankings are based on results from the 2015 season, quality of players and strength of schedule.
The newest edition of the USA Today High School Sports/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Girls Soccer Super 25 Rankings was released on Nov. 24, and the Cougars (24-0-1) made an emphatic jump over others receiving votes (from the Nov. 17 edition) to No. 6 in the country, behind No. 1 Davis High School (Kaysville, Utah), No. 2 McDonogh High School (Owings Mills, Maryland), No. 3 Massapequa (New York) High School, No. 4 Walsh Jesuit High School (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and No. 5 Glastonbury (Connecticut) High School.
The Cougars were the highest-ranked of three New Jersey girls soccer teams in the new poll, followed by No. 9 Basking Ridge, which tied Freehold Township, 0-0 after two overtimes in the NJSIAA Group IV state final to become co-champions on Nov. 21, and now-No. 19 Northern Highlands.
