While most teams run a formation with two forwards, Ardsley typically only goes with one striker up top.
When that player someone as talented as Samantha Torrellas, it’s understandable why the Panthers are comfortable with having an extra player back.
The junior, an all-section honoree last season as well as the reigning Rivertowns Player of the Year, often will take on two or three defenders by herself, but that didn’t stop her from scoring all four of her team’s goals this week.
The latest #lohudgirlssoccer Player of the Week scored a hat-trick in the team’s 3-1 homecoming game win over Sleepy Hollow last Sunday. After being shutout in a 4-0 loss to Class B powerhouse Bronxville on Tuesday, Torrellas scored the lone goal in the team’s 1-0 upset win over Tappan Zee on Wednesday, dribbling around the goalkeeper and finishing with her weaker left foot.
“We ask her to do a lot, and this week, she was amazing,” Ardsley head coach Marc Hattum said. “We ask her to hold the ball for us and re-build our attack through her. She’s our main goal-scorer; we have a lot of pieces, but we don’t have a lot of gifted goal-scorers, and she’s it.”
