Somerset County Tournament second round
Somerville 0 (4), North Plainfield 0 (3): Marisa Adelman converted her attempt during the second sudden-death round of the penalty kick shootout Saturday and the sixth-seeded Somerville High School girls soccer team avoided the upset, topping No. 11 North Plainfield 0-0 (4-3) in the second round of the Somerset County Tournament at Brooks Field.
Adelman, Olivia Markowski and Alexis Williams all hit for the Pioneers (8-0-1) during the best-of-5 opening round of the shootout, with Caitlin Gugliotta, Melissa Bautista and Steffany Marroquin converting for the Canucks (7-4-2).
Markowski and Gugliotta exchanged PKs in the first sudden-death round, before North Plainfield began the second sudden-death round by hitting the post, setting up Adelman for the winner.
Somerville keeper Sarah Coulson made one save, stopping an Ashley Atubi breakaway during overtime. North Plainfield keeper Sabrina Perez finished with 15 saves, including a penalty kick in the final seconds of the first OT.
The Pioneers will visit third-seeded Watchung Hills in next Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Pingry 5, Gill St. Bernard’s 1: Maddie Temares netted a hat trick and fifth-seeded Pingry advanced to the quarterfinals. Natalia Ramirez added two goals and an assist for the Big Blue, will visit fourth-seeded Hillsborough next Saturday. Amelia Kirby scored for 13th-seeded Gill St. Bernard’s.
Bernards 3, Montgomery 0: Charlotte Grimm, Emily Maheras and Laurel McHale scored goals, while Nicole Sullivan made one saves as eighth-seeded Bernards advanced. Katelin Brito chipped in two assists for the Mountaineers, who will face top-seeded Ridge in the quarterfinals next Saturday looking to repeat last year’s stunning upset. Breanna Cocuzzo finished with 19 saves for the ninth-seeded Cougars.
Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament second round
North Hunterdon 3, Vernon 1: Nina Bussanich scored two goals and Lindsey Eugenio added another to send No. 6 North Hunterdon past the No. 11 seed. The Lions will travel to No. 3 Belvidere for the quarterfinals next Saturday.
Union County Tournament second round
Governor Livingston 3, Union Catholic 1: Amanda Bostwick, Lindsay DiStaso and Lara Romano scored goals and sixth-seeded Governor Livingston advanced. Olivia Emanuel made five saves for the Highlanders, who will visit third-seeded Westfield in next weekend’s quarterfinals. Cassie Lamadieu scored off an Ollivia Yarem assist for No. 11 Union Catholic.
A.L. Johnson 2, New Providence 1 (OT): Brielle Carleen scored a first-half goal for New Providence, but the ninth-seeded Pineers fell to the eighth-seeded Crusaders in overtime.
Hunterdon Central 3, Belvidere 0: Dana Flood, Lizzie Knoop and Kelly Lehman scored goal for Hunterdon Central (8-3-1).
Mother Seton 3, Carteret 0: Kathryn Ward scored two goals and Emily Hayes notches to assists to fuel Mother Seton (4-8-1). Stephanie Mejia also scored for the Setters. Carteret fell to 1-14.
Edison 3, Piscataway 1: Felicia Forsythe scored two goals and assisted on another, and Rachel Weber added a goal as Edison scored three unanswered to erase an early deficit. Lela Allen scored in the fifth minute for Piscataway.
Metuchen 5, J.F. Kennedy: Mya Stolarski tallied a goal and an assist, and Molly Walters finished with two assists to pace Metuchen (10-2). Jaylin Cabrera made two saves for the Mustangs (1-12).
Woodbridge 3, J.P. Stevens 0: Gabby D’Emilio netted two goals and Emily Mazzarella dished out two assists to send Woodbridge. Justine Stefura made 14 saves for the Barrons (11-4). Sarah Zimmer stopped eight shots for the Hawks (2-10).
