Franklin D. Roosevelt High School girls tennis coach Bob Mayerhofer told Jessica Schroedl it was well-earned after the Mid-Hudson Athletic League tournament wrapped up Wednesday at Bard College in Annandale.
Schroedl defeated Spackenkill’s Cynthia Ma, 6-1, 6-2, to capture her first-ever MHAL title. She had topped Rachel Li (of Spackenkill), 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinal, and Ma beat Onteora’s Stephanie Smith, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, to advance.
“She was pretty dominating today in the semis and the finals,” Mayerhofer said. “She was really sharp with ground strokes, creating severe angles her opponents could not run down. I’m genuinely pleased with the progression she’s made.”
In a rematch of last year’s doubles final, Marlboro’s Grace Messenger and Emma Messenger beat Katrina Ackerman and Kelly Wilson of Roosevelt, 6-1, 6-3.
The Messengers had topped Marlboro teammates Madi Ross and Brittany DeSantis, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals. Ackerman and Wilson had beaten the Red Hook duo of Clea Schumer and Emily Appenzeller. 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals.
“The two Marlboro girls are very talented,” Mayerhofer said. “I thought our girls played better than last year. Marlboro was just better at what both teams were trying to execute.”
The players who reached the quarterfinals qualified for the Section 9 tournament, which will be held next week, according to tournament coordinator Don Kiernan.
