Godby proves too tough for Catholic

After trailing Catholic in the first quarter, the Godby coaching staff made key adjustments to help earn a 69-49 win over Catholic in the Region 1-4A semifinals.

Godby went to full-court pressure defense. Catholic struggled against the press and Godby took a 31-20 lead before Catholic cut that to 33-30 at the half.

“We did really well in the first quarter,” Catholic coach Nick Mead said. “We got in foul trouble and with their relentless pressure, they hit a couple of shots to get closer. We got away from the gameplan and started losing our legs. We couldn’t get out there and push the ball. I think the transition game hurt us.”

In the third quarter, Godby came out on fire and outscored Catholic 16-4 to take a commanding 49-34 lead.

“With their length and athleticism, it’s something you can’t prepare for,” Mead said. “Once we got into the halfcourt, we didn’t convert our shots. They were ready. They’re very good at what they do.”

But the season’s conclusion for Catholic was nothing for the Crusaders or Mead to hang their heads about, battling with undefeated Godby (30-0) for 32 minutes.

“Our season did not end against a team that wasn’t good,” Mead said. “We had to go to a tough place to play against a very good team. The game doesn’t define anything as far as this season is concerned. We went to war and I’m not taking anything away from my guys. This group had some shoes to fill and they impressed some people with their growth.”

And with nine seniors graduating, it’s safe to say that this year’s team left a strong example for the future of Catholic basketball.

“They set the bar for sure,” Mead said. “We have won three consecutive district titles. The team we’ve lost to each year has gone to the final four year very. These guys came to work and that’s all you can ask as a coach. I’m very proud of where they have put this program.”
