Dayona Godwin of the Stephen Decatur girls basketball team and Nick Powell of the Holly Grove boys basketball team are The Daily Times’ Athletes of the Week for Jan. 5-9.
Godwin, a junior, had 51 points in two games, which included her 1,000 career point against Washington on Tuesday.
Seahawks head coach Amy Fenzel-Mergott knew that despite her previous injury, Godwin was there for her team.
“When she hurt ankle before the Christmas break it was the first time she had a significant injury,” Fenzel-Mergott added. “She waited for it to heal and she was so happy that we beat Pocomoke without her, but she missed playing.”
Fenzel-Mergott also realized when Godwin started with the Seahawks that she had the talent to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
“There wasn’t a doubt in my mind, she is a prolific scorer,” Fenzel-Mergott continued. “Her need to get other people involved is a plus for her, but if we need a score, she is the one who will do it.”
Powell, a senior, totaled 62 points in three games for the Eagles, with his top performance being 25 points against Greenwood Mennonite on Tuesday.
Eagles head coach Robbie Nelms knows that Powell is an integral part to the team.
“Nick is the heart and soul of our team,” Nelms said. “On defense, every one rebound our team gets, he gets three and on offense we get the ball inside to him to either score or get the other teams post players in foul trouble.”
Nelms also feels that Powell importance is more than just stats.
“He goes baseline to baseline and gives 150 percent the whole game, Nelms added. “He goes from tip-off to the end of the game and shows no fatigue. He is also one of those athletes that does anything you ask of him.”
