BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Grace Christian’s Sam Skillman capped a superb season on the mats Saturday by earning a medal at the National Prep Wrestling Tournament at Lehigh University.
Skillman, a junior, earned an eighth-place finish at 106 pounds, winning four of his seven bouts to lift his season record to 37-7.
Fishburne Military School’s Daniel May, who won the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state title at 138, finished 2-2 and failed to place in his bracket.
Skillman won his first bout of the tournament, pinning Demetra Yancopoulus of the Hackley School (N.Y.) in 1:55. However, he fell in the round of 16 to King Sandoval of St. Mary’s Ryken (Md.) on a 7-1 decision, sending the junior to the consolation bracket.
Skillman then got hot, advancing to the consolation semifinals with three straight wins. He first decisioned Justyn Brown of St. Benedict’s (N.J.) 8-1, then pinned Zachary Lehan of Roxbury Latin (Mass.) and Ayebasopreye Eke-Spiff of Randolph-Macon Academy.
Skillman’s win streak ended in the consolation semis when he was pinned by Mark Salvatore of Malvern Prep (Pa.), dropping him to the seventh/eighth place bout. He fell to Kevin Lyskawa of Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.) on a 4-3 decision for the eighth-place medal.
May, who came into the bracket as the No. 9 seed, won his first two bouts to advance to the quarterfinals. He decisioned Zack Walker of Benedictine Prep of Richmond 9-3, then edged Bailey Thomas of Good Counsel (Md.) 3-2.
May unfortunately ran into top-seeded Matt Kolodzik of Blair Academy (N.J.) in the quarters, getting pinned in 2:32. May faced Jake Barry of Poly Prep (N.Y.) in the consolation quarterfinals and they were tied 4-4 at the end of regulation, but Barry took May down in the overtime for the 6-4 sudden victory.
May, who was voted VISAA Wrestler of the Year and is headed for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in the fall, finishes the season with a 54-3 record.
