GRAND LEDGE – The Comets are atop the CAAC Blue.
The Grand Ledge girls cross country team ran for an incredible victory at the CAAC Blue Championship at Ledge Meadows Golf Course Oct. 22. The Comets placed first, third, fifth and sixth to edge East Lansing for the championship.
The Comets were led by Jenna Magness who repeated as league champion with a blazing time of 18:15 – the fourth fastest time in school history and is the 17th fastest in the state this year.
“Jenna was incredible … to bounce back like this after what she would consider a disappointment from Saturday’s Greater Lansing Championship (Oct. 19) shows a lot about her character. She is just a phenomenal runner,” Coach Fred Hutchinson said.
He said, “I couldn’t be more proud of the girls and how they raced. We had a race plan that was a bit aggressive but we had to put ourselves in a position to challenge East Lansing and not let the race get away from us. The girls executed the plan perfectly. They were so impressive as competitors. Each girl did exactly what needed to be done in order to win the championship. It was a great team effort”
Claudia Baryo continued her great season with an excellent third place finish.
The performances of Annmarie Maher, Michaela Donahue and Becky Golisch, Hutchinson said.
“They were all in major battles throughout the race, and they were all clutch performers. Annmarie and Michaela had their best races ever when it counted. Becky, who struggled most of the race because of how she had to run quicker than normal at the beginning really showed a lot of grit and determination for the second and third miles of the race. She could have easily fallen back in the pack but she fought every step today and really sealed the win for us.” Hutchinson said.
Grace Johnson and Morgan Arnouts, both battling injuries, also competed.
“I was happy to see them be able to run decent races because they have both been limited in their training the last several weeks. I know they both would have liked to run better times, but I think on the whole, they competed as well as their bodies would let them today” concluded Hutchinson.
The Comet junior varsity squad finishes their season Oct 28 at the Waverly Invite and the varsity competed for a chance to make it to the state finals at the MHSAA regional meet in Brighton on Friday, Oct 30.
