BLYTHEWOOD – Justin Bailey, Jared Firmstone and Ben Peden hit home runs, and Greenville defeated Wren 10-5 Wednesday in the South Carolina Diamond Invitational at Blythewood High School.
Bailey had two hits and a three-run homer for the Red Raiders. Peden had three hits and a two-run homer, and Firmstone also slammed a two-run homer. Carson Spiers had three hits and two RBIs for Greenville.
Winning pitcher Lucas Coan went the first six innings for the Raiders, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out seven and walking two.
Tanner Mack and Colton Ferguson each had a pair of hits for Wren, and Mack had a solo homer.
Mauldin also played its opener in the tournament, and the Mavericks outslugged Socastee 13-12.
Justin Dean knocked in six runs for the Mavs, three with a fifth-inning homer. Hayden Yown and Qualon Duckett each drove in a pair of runs for Mauldin.
Today’s schedule has Mauldin taking on Lexington at noon, Wren against River Bluff at 2:30 p.m. and Greenville playing Blythewood at 7:30 p.m.
•In the Seahawk Baseball Invitational at Hilton Head Island, Tyler Vaughan tossed a shutout and struck out seven as J.L. Mann rolled to a 15-0 win over Montgomery (Ky.).
Berea also won at Hilton Head, edging Beaufort 4-3.
Today, Berea plays Langley (Va.) at 10 a.m., and Mann takes on South Lakes (Va.) at 1 p.m.
•In the HIT Tournament hosted by West Ashley High School in Charleston, Travelers Rest beat James Island 9-4.
The Devildogs, who have won two of three games thus far in the tournament, will play their fourth and final game at 12:30 p.m. today against Easley.
•In the Carolina Classic at Eastside, Blue Ridge defeated Seneca 7-5; T.L. Hanna beat Greer 9-5; and Palmetto outlasted Eastside 5-3 in eight innings.
