Editor’s note: Following are the two athletes nominated by their school for Gannett Central Wisconsin Media’s High School Sports Awards. The top male and female athletes of the year will be announced May 6, along with the coaches and teams of the year.
Parents: Dean Hinker and Kris Okray
Academic Honors: I received and academic certificate and letter. Throughout high school I averaged being on the A honor roll each quarter. My overall Grade point average during highs school is 3.572.
Favorite sports memory: My sophomore year of volleyball we were a 3 seed and we were playing Rib Lake, who was a 2 seed in the regional final game. We went into five games and ended up winning.
Advice to an athlete: Don’t take the time you have for granted because before you know it you will be playing your last game. Work hard and put time in the off season because the results are very rewarding. Don’t settle for good enough because you can always get better.
Senior letters, honors: Volleyball (first team all-conference, captain, team essence award, top offensive player, kill leader and block leader. I also broke the school record for most kills in a game with 25 kills), basketball (captain).
Parents: Chris and Jana Schmitz
Favorite sports memory: Sophomore year of football we got Loyal in Level 1 of playoffs. We lost to them in regular season and in most sports you don’t get the opportunity to redeem yourself, but this year we did. I got the ball on the 1 yard line, scored and we won.
Inspiration: My family is a huge sports family. Sports is in my blood, every time I compete, I leave it all on the field or court. I play for my family.
College plans: I have been accepted to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, major in Wildlife Ecology/minor in Forestry.
Senior letters, honors: Football (honorable mention all-conference, captain, Best Offensive Player), basketball (captain).
