Grunder nets 40 points, Trumansburg boys rally for win


Austin Grunder scored a season-high 40 points as the 19th-ranked Trumansburg boys’ basketball team rallied for a 65-60 victory over host Dryden in Interscholastic Athletic Conference play on Friday in Dryden.

Grunder, a 6-2 sophomore, made 16 field goals, including three from beyond the 3-point line, and added 5-for-6 foul shooting for the Blue Raiders (8-2, 5-1 IAC), who outscored the Purple Lions 23-13 in the fourth quarter. Grunder is averaging 31 points in his last three games for T-burg.

Luke Richards added nine points for the winners. Six-foot-6 junior Ali Abel-Ferretti scored 24 points to lead the Purple Lions (5-4, 4-2).

Newfield 68, Newark Valley 52: On Friday at Newark Valley, the 10th-ranked Trojans improved to 9-0 overall as Brian Barrett led the way with a game-high 25 points, including five 3-pointers.

Spencer King added 12 points for Newfield, which led 27-20 at halftime and outscored the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, 26-22.

Blake Novi scored 16 points and Aaron Gorsline added 12 for the Cardinals (3-4).

Girls hockey

Ithaca 4, Plattsburgh 3, OT: On Saturday in Plattsburgh, MacRae McCarthy’s goal at 2:33 of overtime lifted the Little Red (6-3-2), which has won four of its last five.

Julie Miettunen, Anastasia Lyon and Clara Karastury also scored for Coach Emily Grippin’s squad, which led 3-1 in the third period before the hosts rallied for a pair of late goals to send the game to overtime. MacRae put home a Miettunen rebound to lift Ithaca, which got 19 saves from Devin Baylor.

On Friday, the Little Red fell to Beekmantown, 4-1. Lyon had the lone goal for Ithaca, assisted by Kiely Howe, while Grace Smith made 33 saves.

Ithaca travels to Oswego on Monday, then returns home for a pair of games this weekend at Cass Park. Ithaca hosts Salmon River at 7 p.m. Friday, and Massena at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

Girls basketball

Vestal 49, Ithaca 36: On Friday at Bliss Gym in Ithaca, the Golden Bears held the Little Red to single digits in each of the first three quarters en route to the victory. Courtney Franz scored 13 points for Vestal.

Sydney Trumble had nine points for Ithaca, which travels to Corning on Wednesday.

Trumansburg 44, Newark Valley 28: On Saturday at Trumansburg, Megan McIntyre and Chloe Mount scored 13 points apiece as the Blue Raiders rallied from a five-point deficit after one quarter.

The Blue Raiders outscored the Cardinals, 14-1, in the second quarter to grab a 22-14 halftime lead. Hannah Luszczek had 13 points to lead Newark Valley.


John Beecher Invitational: On Saturday in Elmira, Ithaca scored 292 points to top a five-team field in the Class A division, with Maine-Endwell finishing second at 268.5.

Junior Kevin Miller won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles for the Little Red and was named the meet’s outstanding swimmers. Teammate Andrew Mikhailichenko won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, and both swam on Ithaca’s winning 400 freestyle relay along with Robert Mangan and Francis Schickel, who won the 100 freestyle.
