Justin Hastings, Chandler Hamilton’s freshman basketball coach the past four seasons, has been recommended to the Chandler district to be Hamilton’s next boys varsity head coach, Principal Fred De Prez said.
De Prez, who is retiring at the end of the school year, said that incoming principal Ken James headed the selection committee that decided to keep it in-house to replace Kevin Hartwig, the school’s only boys basketball coach since it opened in the late 1990s.
“The tradition of the boys basketball program has been strong, and we expect Justin to maintain that tradition and to build it into a state championship contender,” De Prez said.
Hartwig only had two losing seasons in his Hamilton career — his first season and his last season.
“I am excited and humbled to accept the position as head coach at Hamilton High School,” Hastings said in a statement. “I hope the Hamilton community will continue to support our program as we work hard daily to continue to be one of the best programs in the state.”
Hastings, who graduated from Chandler High and has his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State and a master’s from Northern Arizona, was 52-21 the past four seasons leading the Hamilton freshman team.
He was a varsity assistant at Gilbert from 2007-09.
