The Ankeny girls’ bowling team nearly matched its season-high score en route to a fifth-place finish in the Central Iowa Conference Invitational on Thursday at Plaza Lanes.
The Hawkettes posted a total of 2,345, just nine pins shy of their season-high score. They eclipsed 2,300 for the fifth time in their last eight meets.
The Ankeny boys’ team, meanwhile, placed ninth in the 10-team field. The Hawks posted a score of 2,756.
Fort Dodge won the boys’ title with a total of 3,227. Urbandale was second with a 3,180, and five other boys’ teams scored above 3,000.
Johnston won the girls’ crown with a score of 2,978. The Dragons finished 110 pins ahead of defending champion Fort Dodge.
The Hawkettes were led by Katie Brown, who bowled a 344 series. Katie Heileman had a 334 in her first varsity meet of the season.
Sydney Sears bowled a 305, Sam Jamison had a 272, Katelyn Couchman followed with a 254, and Kelsi Ransom added a 211.
The Hawkettes bowled a 232 in their final baker’s game to move from eighth place into fifth.
Collin Runyan had a career-high 425 total to lead the Hawks. He bowled a 233 in his second game.
Tyler Follett had a 389, Garrett Schaeffer rolled a 378, Nate Anderson had a 374, Chase Van Blair followed with a 347, and Josh Macklin added a 296.
Dowling Catholic sweeps Ankeny
Both Ankeny teams completed their dual-meet season with a loss to host Dowling Catholic on Feb. 9 at Val Lanes.
The Maroons won the boys’ meet by a score of 2,673 to 2,502. They won the girls’ meet by a score of 2,389 to 2,270.
Schaeffer bowled a 361 series to lead the Hawks, who finished with a 4-12 record. Follett had a 346, Anderson rolled a 334, Van Blair had a 309, Macklin bowled a 302, and Runyan finished with a 296.
Brown bowled a career-high 364 series for the Hawkettes, who dropped to 3-13 overall. Sears was right behind her with a 355, Couchman had a 266, Jamison bowled a 259, Ransom had a 243, and Brooke Lincoln added a 196.
