Getting six or seven points is always preferable to three.
But when the North Buncombe football team has to settle for a field goal, Tommy Apostolopoulos is about as automatic as it comes.
The right-footed senior has made seven of his nine field goal attempts this season for the Black Hawks (1-3) and all 12 of his extra points. That means that Apostolopous has accounted for 33 of the team’s total 105 points.
The longest field goal of Apostolopoulos’ career came from 46 yards out in North Buncombe’s season opener (a 21-20 loss at home to Pisgah on Aug. 21).
The NCHSAA record for single-season field goals (20) was set 12 years ago by Wilmington Hoggard’s Connor Barth, who has kicked in the NFL since then for Denver, Kansas City, Miami and Tampa Bay.
