Hey, not bad for a football team picked to finish sixth in its conference.

Hayesville is 3-0 for the first time since 2001 after Friday’s 34-23 win at Enka.

Kyle Rhinehardt threw for 168 yards and three touchdowns – all to Braxton Cox (6, 14 and 70 yards). And Josh Harris added 164 rushing yards and touchdown runs of 28 and 64 yards.

Friday was the first-ever meeting between the 1-A Yellow Jackets and 3-A Jets (1-3). Hayesville is now the only undefeated team in the Smoky Mountain Conference despite coming into this season with a seven-game losing streak.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been 3-0 here,” Hayesville coach Mitch Myers said.

“We’re excited. We’re still making a lot of mistakes, but we’re excited about the possibilities. This was the best effort we’ve had so far.”

The Jets trailed 27-0 at halftime. They were led by Michael Cantrell (221 yards, two touchdowns), who is now unofficially up to 755 for the season.
