Haywood County Post 47 left no doubt in the second round of the American Legion state playoffs.
Post 47 not only got its 20th win on Thursday night, but completed a three-game sweep of visiting Mint Hill with a 9-2 victory at Lake Junaluska Elementary School.
Gray McCurry accounted for three of Post 47’s 14 hits and was only a home run shy of the cycle. Holt Underwood also had three hits. Jace Milkey, Cal Raleigh and Travis Holden added two each.
Ethan Meece was the winning pitcher. He threw a complete game (seven innings) with 11 strikeouts.
Haywood County (20-5) advances to play either Hickory or Union County in next week’s third round of the playoffs.
Mint Hill (18-4) came into the second-round series with only one loss, but lost Game 1 by a 10-3 score and Game 2 by a 3-2 score on Tuesday night in Charlotte.
“We’re feeling good,” Post 47 coach Mitchell Whitner said.
“(Mint Hill) was the top seed out of the East (division) and our guys knew that. They took it as a challenge. We’ve played down to our competition at times, but not this series. They had something to prove. We definitely came out ready to play.”
