Hickory Post 48 was a perfect 5-0 in extra-inning games this season.

But that record hadn’t been tested against Western North Carolina’s premier American Legion team until Monday night in Catawba County.

Haywood County Post 47 won Game 1 of the third-round playoff series in 13 innings, 7-5.

Louisburg recruit Bret Baldwin was batting out of the No. 9 spot in the lineup, but gave Haywood (21-5) an early lead with a two-run homer. The road team then pushed across two runs in the top of the 13th. Cal Raleigh (double) and Thomas Tatham (single) had RBI base hits in the decisive rally.

Baldwin and Raleigh led the way with three hits each for Post 47 and Bryce Burgess was the winning pitcher. Burgess scattered six hits and five walks in 5.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Hickory (23-9) had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth but did not score. The game was delayed more than an hour and a half at one point by severe weather that swept through Newton.

The best-of-five series resumes Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Waynesville with Game 2 at Lake Junaluska Elementary School.
