ARMONK – At one point in the heart of his senior season, Ross Weinfeld thought it was over. He had been sick, missed two games, struggled in another, and was convinced he had mono. That could have meant a long stretch away from basketball, if he returned at all.
Luckily, the Byram Hills senior point guard avoided that ominous diagnosis. Now, he is healthy for the first time all season. Weinfeld’s form has made a difference of late, including Monday night when he scored seven of his 14 points in the fourth quarter of a 61-58 league win over Rye.
“I’m back, for sure,” said Weinfeld, who scored his team’s last four points to settle a one-possession game. “Before I started missing games, I wasn’t feeling great. I wasn’t my full self. Now I’m back, I’m healthy and today I felt like we put on a good team performance.”
Weinfeld and Jared Friedberg (14 points, six rebounds, four assists) provided backcourt support for big man Andrew Groll, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds. The trio led the Bobcats (7-3) back from an eight-point deficit in the third quarter, a run that intensified when Rye’s Andrew Livingston was whistled for an intentional foul on Skyler Sinon.
After Sinon hit a free throw, Weinfeld drained a 3-pointer and Byram Hills had earned a key four-point swing.
“You have to retaliate,” Groll said of his team’s response. “After that, we retaliated.”
The Bobcats pushed their lead to eight on Mike Sardo’s 3-pointer to end the third but Rye (5-6) regained the lead midway through the fourth. Charlie Nagle (15 points) tied it, and Drew Abate (18) gave the Garnets a 56-54 advantage.
Weinfeld responded with a 3-pointer on the next possession, and Byram Hills never trailed again.
“Earlier in the season, I was more passive, more of a facilitator,” Weinfeld said. “Coach (Ted Repa) wanted me to be more aggressive, and today was the first day I really took that to heart.”
