Midlothian pitcher Jimmy Fouse committed to Dallas Baptist.

Midlothian pitcher Jimmy Fouse committed to Dallas Baptist.

Led by 6-2 senior Jimmy Fouse and 6-9 sophomore Russell Smith, Midlothian’s two starting pitchers are 9-0 with 94 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings. Jesuit’s 6-5 junior left-hander Kyle Muller is 5-0 with 59 strikeouts in 27 innings. Coppell’s 6-6 Jensen Elliott is 5-1 with 6-4 sophomore John Kodros already an LSU commit. Smith also does play basketball for Midlothian a la former Highland Park/Princeton/MLB 6-10 pitcher Chris Young who led the Scots to a 1998 UIL state baseball title.

Forney’s 6-4 freshman right-hander Mason Englert has committed to Texas A&M. Fort Worth Christian’s 6-4 sophomore pitcher Alex Scherff has committed to Arizona State.

Colleges and major league scouts are favoring taller pitchers whose bodies have the stamina for long-term pitching. Fouse committed to Dallas Baptist this week with Smith a recent TCU commit and high on pro scouts’ radars for the 2016 draft as is Texas commit Muller. Elliott has committed to Oklahoma State. Plano’s Stanford signee Mitchell Hansen is a highly regarded outfielder with speed but the 6-4 senior also leads the Wildcats on the mound.

There still are hard-throwing, six-foot pitchers like Arlington Martin’s Eric Walker and Highland Park’s Layne Looney but with the growing trend of basketball-sized pitchers, it’s getting harder to measure up to tall standards.
