Western North Carolina’s last undefeated basketball team is still going strong in the NCHSAA playoffs.

Destiny Elkins came through with 20 points, while Ciera Chandler and Hailey Crane netted 10 apiece Saturday to give the Mountain Heritage girls a 60-42 home win over Polk County in the second round of the 2-A playoffs.

The Cougars (24-0) were staring at a six-point deficit after the first quarter, but led 22-20 at halftime. The Western Highlands Conference champs then outscored the Wolverines, 21-10, in the the third quarter.

Hayley Kropp, who scored her 1,000th career point earlier this week, led Polk County (17-9) with 19 points. Kara Overholt had 15.

Mountain Heritage is expected to host a third-round game Tuesday night in Burnsville. An opponent has not yet been determined, but it will be either R-S Central (19-5) or Lake Norman Charter (11-12).
