Ciera Chandler only started about a half-dozen basketball games for the Mountain Heritage girls last season.
She looks to be ready for a big step up in playing time and production as a sophomore.
Chandler scored a school-record 36 points (including six 3-pointers) in Tuesday’s 60-39 nonconference win at Roberson.
“It was a great night,” Cougars coach Susie Shelton said.
“So far, Ciera is having a really good year for us.”
Shelton had owned the Mountain Heritage single-game record for scoring (32 points) until November 2014 when forward Destiny Elkins netted 33 in a nonconference game against Asheville High. Elkins, who was the Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year last season, is now a freshman at Montreat.
Chandler is a 5-foot-5 guard who averaged 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.5 steals for last season’s 24-1 WHC championship team. She received All-WHC honors.
Chandler and fellow sophomore Hali King came into Tuesday tied for the team lead in scoring (10.5 points per game). King had 11 points in Skyland.
The Cougars (3-0) only have one senior (Haley Crane) back from last season.
