Andrew Bailey finished with a .560 batting average this past spring, his final season at Honeoye Falls-Lima.
The Monroe County league’s Division II player of the year also was strong on the mound. He struck out 81 batters last season, which the Cougars topped with the Section V Class A Championship.
So how does the Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year spend his time during the summer? Swinging and pitching away. It is baseball season after all, and there is a good chance that all of the high school all-state selections by the New York State Sportswriters Association will still wear a glove, even as temperatures rise this summer.
Bailey, who heads for Ithaca College in late August, is among 41 players from schools in Section V who were named all-state, including seven on either the Class AA, A, B, C or D first teams.
This is Bailey’s second summer with the Chi-Town Cream, which has played 35 games since the end of the school year. Victor graduate Tommy Wagner, the 2013 AGR Player of the Year, recommended Bailey try out for the Chi-Town Cream. A workout in Sarasota, Fla. led to tryouts of sorts in Dallas and Scottsdale, Ariz.
“We’ve got guys from Kansas, Michigan and Chicago,” Bailey said. “Everyone is pretty much committed to Division I schools.”
Bailey, a right-hander listed at 5-feet-11 and 185 pounds, said he primarily pitches and is a designated hitter, often in the lineup’s clean up spot. He probably won’t return to Honeoye Falls until early August. The team is in Indianapolis this week.
