LA CROSSE – Scott Hietpas and Eric Schommer have dominated the Eastern Valley Conference triple jump the past several seasons.
On Friday, the duo finished first and second, respectively, in the D2 event at the WIAA state track meet at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Hietpas won the title with a leap of 44-5.5. Schommer finished
right behind with a 43-11.
“I jumped pretty good,” Hietpas said. “I took first so, but I can always jump better but I’m glad with how I placed. I’m happy to be here and happy to win.”
Schommer wanted the state title, but was happy to get points for the Freedom team as the Irish are expected to compete for the overall D2 team title.
“Obviously, I wanted first but it’s points for the team,” he said. “We’re looking at the team and we’re here to win the team title, so I’m glad I could contribute.”
Schommer said the rivalry with Hietpas has been a good one.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “I’ve got nothing but great things to say about him. It’s been fun getting to be friends over the last four years. It made the competition that much better and that much more fun.”
