FRIDAY’S GAMES

CENTRAL GROUP V SEMIFINAL

(1) South Brunswick 27, (5) Manalapan 21 (FINAL)

The intellect of Josh Liao came to the forefront at the absolute biggest moment of the game and the South Brunswick football team’s season.

With the clock running on 4th-and-goal and the game tied 21-21, Liao made a heads-up decision to audible from a run to a pass, finding a wide open Mohamed Jabbie in the end zone as time expired, sending top-seeded South Brunswick to a 27-21 victory over fifth-seeded Manalapan on Friday night.

Led by an effective ground game from Rumson-FH’s Michael O’Connor, Bryan Hess, and Matt Vecchiarelli, the top-seeded Bulldogs defeated No. 5 Matawan 24-13 in an NJSIAA Central Group III semifinal game under the lights at Borden Stadium Friday night.

Twice Ocean wiped away Red Bank leads. Finally, an interception by Jalen Willis set up Palmer’s decisive touchdown run to break a 14-14 tie with 9:24 left in the third quarter.

The result sends Red Bank into the final against Rumson-Fair Haven in two weeks.

CENTRAL GROUP II SEMIFINAL

(6) Raritan 42, (2) Delaware Valley 13 (FINAL)

CENTRAL GROUP I SEMIFINAL

CENTRAL GROUP I SEMIFINAL

(3) Palmyra 35, (7) Keyport 34 (FINAL)

Trailing Keyport by six points in the fourth quarter, Panthers quarterback Max Smyth completed an 18-yard slant to Taj Harris, who then fumbled the ball. It took a high bounce into the arms of teammate Kameron Kennedy, who ran the final 15 yards for a touchdown.

That gave Palmyra a 35-34 victory in Friday’s NJSIAA Central Group I semifinal, breaking the heart of a Keyport squad that led 34-14 at halftime.

NORTH 2 GROUP IV SEMIFINAL

(1) Middletown South 41, (4) Middletown North 14 (FINAL)

Predictably, this matchup on a Friday night brought with it a charged up atmosphere at ‘The Swamp’ and when it ended, the Eagles found themselves exactly where they expect to be in late November.

Senior running back Cole Rogers rushed for 210 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries, senior quarterback Matt Mosquera passed for 176 yards and Middletown South turned the Lions over four times in registering a 41-14 win in front of an announced crowd of 4,469.

SOUTH GROUP V SEMIFINAL

(4) Toms River North 14, (1) Lenape 0 (FINAL)

Toms River North’s first drive of the second half is what championship caliber high school football teams are made of in November.

The Mariners marched 80 yards on 11 plays, eight of them runs, and appropriately finished off the drive with junior quarterback Mike Husni’s 1-yard keeper to take the lead in what was a scoreless game.

Then in the fourth quarter, senior running back Asante Moorer added an insurance touchdown and senior defensive lineman Dashon Copes sealed the game with a fumble recovery.

Those plays and many more enabled the No. 4 seed Mariners to get a  14-0 NJSIAA South Group IV semifinal round game victory over No. 1 seed Lenape on Friday night.
