Leading up to the high school football season on Aug. 21, each day we’ll look at two divisions and sections.


The teams: Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain, Cottonwood Mingus, Prescott, Flagstaff Coconino, Flagstaff.

The favorite: Bradshaw Mountain. Back-to-back region champs return nine offensive starters and eight defensive starters.

The contender: Prescott. It went 7-3 last season but may have to go by committee to replace the value athlete Skylor Clinton brought.

The dark horse: Mingus. This won’t be a .500 team again. Coach Bob Young will right the ship.

The intrigue: Bradshaw Mountain could make a run at state. It not only returns most of its starters, it picked up three quality transfers, including running back Justin Castro from Prescott. … Dave Moran is the permanent head coach at Bradshaw Mountain after serving as interim last season when the Bears won seven games and reached the state playoffs. Moran played quarterback and defensive back for his father, Steve, at Bradshaw Mountain. … Linebacker Luke Roberts will be a third-year starter at Prescott. … Dave Dirkson is Flagstaff’s ninth head coach in 10 seasons and has installed a new offense and defense. … Because of a lack of participation, Flagstaff disbanded its JV teams last year when the varsity when 2-8. … Mingus coach Bob Young has moved quarterback Jordan Upham to slot back. Watch for sophomore Tyler Kelly to take over the reins at QB. … Prescott just missed out on the state playoffs the past two seasons, despite winning records. … Bradshaw Mountain battled Division I power Chandler Hamilton well in a 7-on-7 meeting in San Diego this summer. … Coconino welcomes back QB Cristo Tabares, who missed most of last season with an injury. … Second-year Coconino coach Jeremiah Smith formerly coached at Flagstaff High.

The teams: Phoenix Sunnyslope, Phoenix Washington, Phoenix Greenway, Glendale Independence, Phoenix Thunderbird, Phoenix Moon Valley.

The favorite: Sunnyslope. It won 11 games in Division II last season.

The dark horse: Moon Valley. Coach Samuel Jacobs has brought stability to a rising program.

The intrigue: Graduation could take a hit on Sunnyslope, which lost 54 touchdowns from last season’s 11-1 team. But coach Damon Pieri has cultivated a winning culture with more talent coming through. … Five sophomores started the last six games for Thunderbird last season. … Kaleb Hofer had outstanding sophomore year, but broke his ankle on the second play of last year’s opener. He is looking to make a comeback. .. Senior James Gibbs is making the move from cornerback to quarterback this year at Greenway. He will still play cornerback. … Greenway’s  Romeo Robertson had 600 rushing yards before an injury ended his season after five games. He  is back and better. … Moon Valley returns four starters on the offensive line, which should  allow junior QB Nathan Pollard get going. … Moon Valley’s defensive line may be the most athletic in the section.
