Elmira Notre Dame overcame a slow start before defeating Newark Valley 56-43 in Interscholastic Athletic Conference boys basketball Tuesday night in Southport.
Darius Garvin led the Crusaders (7-2) with 20 points. Joe Prunier, Parker May and Pat Brown added nine apiece.
Chad Wright paced the Cardinals with 17 points.
Newark Valley (3-6) led 8-6 after the first quarter, then Notre Dame used a 20-11 run in the second to take a 26-19 halftime lead. After an even third quarter, the Crusaders pulled away with a 15-9 final quarter.
“We kind of lessened up in the second quarter,” Notre Dame coach Bill Hopkins said. “We put on a little spurt midway into the third quarter, but they always seemed to have an answer.”
Union-Endicott 49, Horseheads 44: At U-E, Horseheads outscored the Tigers 21-9 from 3-point range but came up short in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference game.
Ben Clark and Sean Paul Owen scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Blue Radiers.
Watkins Glen 77, Thomas A. Edison 30: At Edison, Watkins Glen led 28-4 after the first quarter of IAC play.
The Senecas had three double-figure scorers: Colin Gates with 17, Joe Palumbo with 11 and Dominick Rolston with 10.
For Edison, Tyler Northrup finished with 11 points.
Spencer-Van Etten 58, Odessa-Montour 36: At S-VE, Zach Tyson scored 22 points for the Panthers, who led 56-26 after three quarters.
Odessa-Montour got nine points from Zach Phytila.
Waverly 60, Tioga 19: At Waverly, the Wolverines led 30-5 at halftime of the IAC contest.
Peyton Miller, Garrett Sutryk and Alex Volpe each scored nine points for Waverly.
Odessa-Montour 42, Spencer-Van Etten 39 (OT): At Odessa, Gillian Clark drained seven 3-pointers en-route to a 22-point night for the Indians (6-3) in IAC play.
Watkins Glen 42, Thomas A. Edison 23: At Watkins Glen, Amanda Pike scored 18 points in the IAC game for the Senecas.
Caitlyn Yartym was Edison’s top scorer with 10.
Vestal 54, Elmira 27: At Vestal, Elmira received pinfall victories from Micah Carpenter at 113 pounds, Charlie Mahan at 132 and Randy Banks at 285.
Winning by decisions for the Express were Garrett Andriene (138), Matt Burge (182) and Reese Harriel (220).
Horseheads 106, Corning 77: At Corning, Kenyon Winkky won the 100-yard backstroke and the 100 butterfly for Horseheads.
For Corning, Reid Cagir claimed the 100 and 200 freestyles.
Watkins Glen 118, Dryden 47: At Dryden, Watkins Glen’s Matt Doppel set a pool record and school in the 100 freestyle 46.8 seconds, winning the event by almost 10 seconds.
Lansing 72, Odessa-Montour 22: At Odessa, Billy Teague won the 500 freestyle for the Indians.
Thomas A. Edison 4, Odessa-Montour 0: At Edison, Zach Braster topped the Spartans with a 584.
Waverly 4, Lansing 0: At Valley Bowling Center in Waverly, Mason Beard’s 716 series led five Wolverines who reached the 600 mark.
Watkins Glen 4, Newark Valley 0: At Watkins Glen, Wrett Brower and Wyatt Brower had 484 and 484, respectively, for the Senecas.
Thomas A. Edison 4, Odessa-Montour 0: At Edison, Kirstin Rosell’s 619 paced the Spartans.
Waverly 4, Lansing 0: At Valley Bowling Center in Waverly, Cassy Bowman led the Wolverines with a 631.
Watkins Glen 3, Newark Valley 1: At Watkins Glen, Samantha Bradley paced the Senecas with a 557.
Corning 3, Binghamton 2: At Crystal Lanes in East Corning, the Hawks got a 555 series from Kiana Lisi.
